White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, speaking in an interview with Fox News, gave no other details about the funding cuts, and representatives for the White House could not be immediately reached for comment.
A White House document said the order would direct "the Department of Education to issue guidance on how the States can use federal funding formulas to support their K-12 scholarship programs."
On school choice, the order directs the U.S. Department of Education to prioritize federal funding for school choice programs through its grant programs. It also says U.S. states will be directed on how they could use block grants to support alternatives to public education, such as private and religious schools.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth must also create a plan allowing military families to use Pentagon funds to send their children to the school of their choosing, the document said.
The Department of the Interior must also address how Native American families with students in the Bureau of Indian Education can use federal funds to send their children to schools of their choice, according to the document provided by a White House official.
Trump on Wednesday also will sign an executive order canceling student visas for what it called "Hamas sympathizers" at U.S. colleges and universities, and another order related to the nation's 250-year anniversary on July 4, 2026.
