Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party scored historic gains to win the first round of France's parliamentary election on Sunday, official results showed, but the final result will depend on days of horsetrading before next week's run-off. Here’s how we covered it.

HOW FRENCH MEDIA COVERED THE FIRST ROUND:

In the run-up to the election, France 24 examined the relationship between National Rally and French media tycoon Vincent Bolloré. Reporting it under the headline: "How Bolloré, the 'French Murdoch', carried Le Pen's far right to the brink of power."

Highlighting the significance of National Rally's win, Le Monde’s coverage included how the head of France's communist party Fabien Roussel "was beaten by a Rassemblement National candidate who garnered more than 50% of the vote in the first round".

The Local France explained how France produces such accurate exit poll results, "while the final percentages usually vary slightly, the overall result is almost always correct."

HOW MEDIA OUTSIDE OF FRANCE COVERED IT:

Politico looked at Saint Denis, the hometown of National Rally's far-right leader Jordan Bardella, stating: "Bardella's hometown won't be voting for him." It called the commune in the northern suburbs of Paris that has a high immigrant population "the incarnation of everything he despises about modern France".

The Guardian reported on how Britain's Labour Party leader Keir Starmer reacted. He said: "Only progressives have the answers to the challenges that are facing us in this country and across Europe."

Daily Mail focused on protests in Paris "as thousands of enraged voters set light to rubbish, smashed up shop windows and launched fireworks" after the National Rally's first round win.

The New York Times looked at the similarity in circumstances between Macron and Biden. "The U.S. presidential debate and Sunday's snap election in France have emboldened nationalist forces that could challenge NATO and undo the defense of Ukraine."
