Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said on Friday the island must rely on itself for defence, as China ramps up military pressure to force the democratic island to accept its sovereignty claims.

Responding to reporters' questions on Taiwan-related comments made by U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, Lin said Taiwan is buying weapons from the United States and that it continues to boost its defence spending.

Trump was quoted as saying this week that Taiwan should pay to be defended and accused the island of taking the U.S. semiconductor business.
